Hachikō, the Akita

Many years ago, I was listening to the radio, I heard the DJ sharing the story of the great Hachiko in Japan which waited for his long passed away master to return home in a railway station for 9 years. Ever since, the story remain in my mind as I am so touch and overwhelm by it’s uncondition love and loyalty.

Today, my admiration towards Hachiko arise again after I watched the movie ”Hachiko: A Dog’s Story” starring Richard Gere.

This is a remake of the 1987 Japanese film Hachikō Monogatari which is based on Hachiko’s true story.

The story begins with Professor Parker Wilson found a lost Akita dog at the train station and keep it as nobody claims it. Later he named it “Hachi” as translates the symbol on the pup’s collar.
Everyday Hachi accompanied his master to the train station and return each evening to greet him after work. One day, sadly his master departs, passes away and never returns to the station. Hachi faithfully returns to the same spot at the station the very next day, and every day for the next nine years to wait for his beloved master.

This film is about loyalty and the strong bond between the Proffessor and Hachiko. This faithfulness friendship is the quality we should learn.

A photo of the the actual Hachikō and a bronze statue in his likeness was erected at Shibuya Station.

I highly recommend everyone to watch this movie and remember to prepare some tissues because you will cry especially during the last part of the movie!!

Hachiko’s legendary faithfulness became a symbol of loyalty. His story teaches us the qualities of unconditional love, gratitude, integrity and loyalty.
